For some context, this is the first time Jonathan, Daniel and Lindsay have performed a number from ''Merrily,'' out of context, on TV. Of course, in the show, ''Old Friends'' is fully staged and choreographed. Frank, Charley and Mary are not standing at mikes. If Groff comes off most comfortable in this setting, it's probably because he's done dozens and dozens of cabaret shows through the years. Lindsay also has done solo concerts. Far as I know, Daniel hasn't. It's one thing to perform a song in character; it's another to sing it basically as yourself at the mike. Even so, I thought their camaraderie as ''Old Friends'' and affection for each other, shines through. For me, they're always a treat. Here's to them. Who's like them? Damn few!

(Ever since ''Merrily'' began previews last September, every performance has been sold out. I doubt they booked ''The Late Show'' last night to just insure Radcliffe's upcoming 4 days-off are also sold out. More likely, it's just part of the show's Tony campaign during the homestretch of voting.)
