It's a slippery slope that keeps getting more and more slippery.

From the clips I saw of the most recent Oklahoma revival (I wish I had been able to see it live), Ali Stroker was an amazing force to be reckoned with, taking a role that was not conceived as disabled, and making it her own. THAT is what I want to see more of. Perhaps there could be a Richard III where Lady Anne (for instance) is played by a disabled actor, and she could make the role her own in the same way.

But to say that the only way to engage a disabled actor is to cast them ONLY in roles where the character is disabled - I agree, that entirely misses the point. I wouldn't be against that specific casting in this case, if the actor saw it as a meaningful opportunity - but to pigeonhole that role and to say that an abled actor can't possibly be allowed to inhabit the body of a disabled caricature (and yes, I use the word caricature here) - I'm sorry, even Mr. Liberal me can't see the point of that.

ALL actors in marginalized groups should get much much much more visibility than they get. (And disabled actors are still relatively in the shadows.) But visibility in a variety of roles, please - and especially in roles that have been denied them for ages because they don't fit the "white privilege" mold we have gotten used to, both consciously and unconsciously. (In other words, as characters who are NOT disabled.) But how about having some vision beyond the obvious?

I don't know if we have any actors with disabilities on ATC, or people who have other connections with that community. I'd love to hear their thoughts. I'll gladly be told I'm off the mark. I'm eager to learn. But somehow I tend to assume that actors with disabilities are not specifically longing to play Richard III simply based on physicality. I would like to believe they would love to be seen playing ANY role.
