Before Tales of the South Pacific won the Pulitzer for fiction, the prize was for novels. I guess they changed it to fiction because of Tales of the South Pacific, although, as you note, the stories are interrelated and there are recurring characters, so it kind of straddles the line between a collection of stories and a novel.
