I do think that "Look Over There" is up there with Herman's best songs, and I won't deny that "the Best Of Times" delivers as it should(though the vocal arrangements are brutal lol) and "Song On The Sand" is quite beautiful. But I feel so much of the rest of the score isn't Herman's best at all, especially in terms of lyrics and how they don't always sit on the music well, or how the melodies don't always soar as they could have, and I really don't like much of Fierstein's book, especially his writing for the Cagelles. Yes, it was an important piece when it first got produced, but for me it still sits too much in the world of cliche and maybe even stereotype - and it hasn't aged well at all IMO. But - one can't like everything. :-) |
