I attended the U. of Illinois from 1966 through 1970. They definitely had film societies at the time. I remember seeing films like The 39 Steps, A Man for All Seasons, The Charge of the Light Brigade (1936 version) and many others at school during those years.

In Chicago during the 50's, CBS had The Early Show in the afternoon and The Best of MGM (which eventually was retitled The Best of CBS) late on Saturday nights. ABC had movies on weekdays at 10:00 PM hosted by Jim Moran (the Courtesy Man). They presented old films from the 30's and 40's from all the film studios.

I actually didn't see Beyond the Forest until Cinemax debuted in 1980.
