Yes, there was a Film Society of Lincoln Center tribute to Davis at Avery Fisher Hall on April 24, 1989. I started to wonder about this last night. And when she came onstage after extensive clips were shown, she said, "What a dump!" Maybe this author is thinking of that but is just very confused about what it was. I agree that it's rather amazingly careless, if not clueless, to make that kind of statement about something that is so easy to check nowadays.
