The Mendes production of Cabaret played a limited run at the Donmar in London, and didn't transfer. And that's not unusual - Mendes's production of Assassins a couple of years earlier didn't transfer for an extended commercial run. In the same era, the Donmar's very, very highly acclaimed production of Paula Vogel's How I Learned To Drive, which featured a stunning, star-making performance from Helen McCrory, didn't transfer for a commercial run elsewhere. For a production to transfer from the Donmar is - still - the exception rather than the rule. This summer there'll be a West End run for their production of Next to Normal from last year - but their 2022 production of The Band's Visit was a sold-out hit, the reviews couldn't have been better if they'd been written by the show's publicist, and it played out the scheduled run and closed. Pity, because Miri Mesika was extraordinary in it and I'd love to see it again.
