What is interesting to note, this is the first musical transfer I can identify where Jesse Green, who gave it a mixed review off Broadway, did not review the transfer. The summary of his review was the first act was fantastic and it all fell apart in the second act. By assigning Elizabeth for Broadway, the show is given a fresh set of eyes. Though it appears she did see it off-Broadway and addresses for her why it is improved. Specially, by taking the emphasis away from the love story and starting right from the beginning on the mother daughter conflict, she felt that everything came into focus.

Having seen both versions, as well, I read Sunday's rave review with complete astonishment. Unless huge script changes were put it on the night Elizabeth saw the show, I can say confidently hardly any significant changes were made from off-Broadway and certainly not a significant shift away from the love story. This has been a very weak season for new musicals, in my opinion. It's nice to read a rave review, but I don't know why this was the show that got them. This show has one of the strongest singing casts on Broadway, but they are still saddled with one of the worst scripts and surrounded by some of the most annoying choreography of the season. I am not a conspiracy theorist, but it seems the only reason this review exists is to set up some kind of horse race with Illinoise. Up until this rave review, there was no front runner to beat the last musical entry of the season.
