As amazing as she is, and as many fans as she has in the Broadway fan world, I don't believe that Donna Murphy star vehicle is going to sell enough tickets or is dependable box office for a full revival...

But I think this is an amazing role for a more famous actress over 40 who can sing. I could absolutely see it being mounted with Glenn Close (though I doubt she wants to do a 3rd broadway musical production where she plays a delusional woman with amazing outfits, but who knows, they are very different characters and stories).

I could also see someone like Anne Hathaway doing in a few years (she's 41, and of course looks great) -- the Countess doesn't have to be *old*, and the actress playing her certainly doesn't have to be either, Angela was 44 when she did it. We are now used to older actors like Betty Buckley, Chita, and Tyne Daly doing it, but that's obviously not how it was first cast.

I think Bette Midler could possibly do it, though that would be a very different Countess.

Bernadette Peters has a similar problem of box office power, but I do think she's quite a bit more powerful at the box office and for marketing than Donna is, and I'd love to see her Countess.

Catherine Zeta Jones could do it, but I wonder if she's still a big enough name.

Sheryl Lee Ralph could be an interesting choice, and she's at a high in her career and reach so that could be a thing.

I'm sure she has no interest in even doing 6 shows a week as the lead of a stage musical, but if Meryl Streep wanted to commit, she'd be an incredible choice and a huge draw.

But yes I do think a bigger name being willing to commit is the only way we will get a full broadway mounting, and by full I mean even Encores-level production values.
