Regarding Gyllenhaal and Radcliffe, there's two factors at stake. Their need to earn money and their desire to play interesting roles and, basically, take on professional opportunities that they WANT to do.

Radcliffe, certainly, doesn't need the money. His childhood spent as Harry Potter has given him the ability to never have to work again (assuming he's not reckless with his money), which has lead to a post-Harry Potter career of theatre work, smaller indie films, and the odd television series, projects that he was excited to do. I don't think he's been in a single blockbuster since the end of Harry Potter. He seems to be doing exactly what HE wants to do. In fact, this MERRILY production happened originally because it was something he wanted to do. He was the first person announced and it was not even clear at the beginning if he was to play Frank or Charley.

Gyllenhaal is trickier. While he's had a solid career and has starred in big budget blockbusters, none of his films really seem beloved or, with the exception of BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, feel...for lack of a better word...important. If you called central casting and asked for a generic movie star type, he's exactly what you'd get. I'm not certain how that translates to the financials, but I don't think he's make a list of top earners in Hollywood. But that doesn't mean he's not more than comfortable and it's unlikely (again, assuming he's not reckless with his money) that he'll need a survival job anytime soon. But, he clearly chafes at the handsome movie star thing and longs to do more challenging, more interesting projects and that has lead him to the stage with some regularity in recent years. If he didn't look quite the way he does, I wonder if he'd have had his Hollywood moment by now and be primarily a stage actor. Anyway, I guess my point is that he MAY have to continue to earn the Hollywood money, it wouldn't surprise me to see him spending more and more time on stage and/or try to work out a deal to do that stage role he wants to do for a year and also shoot a film or two in NYC during the day.
