BIRDLAND JAZZ CLUB will present the return of award-winning international artist Ari Axelrod with an encore performance of "A Place for Us: A Celebration of Jewish Broadway" on Monday, May 13 at 7:00 PM. Hailed by BroadwayWorld as "genuinely one of the finest shows this writer has ever seen," the concert spotlights Jewish vitality and culture by honoring the songs and stories of Jewish composers and their contributions to the American musical. Beloved melodies and lyrics by the likes of Irving Berlin, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Schwartz, and Carole King will transport you to the streets of the theatre district, your Bubbie's Shabbos table, or your corner of the sky. There is a $30 music charge. Birdland is located at 315 West 44th Street in New York.

Ari Axelrod was named one of the "36 to Watch," recognizing him as one of the 36 most influential Jews in the country, by The Jewish Week. He received the 2022 Bistro Award for Theatrical Artistry in Song. "A Place for Us: A Celebration of Jewish Broadway," began with a sold-out run at Birdland, featuring six-time Emmy and Tony nominee Tovah Feldshuh. It has since grown to international acclaim, performing to sold-out audiences around the world, and garnered him a BroadwayWorld Award and a MAC Award nomination for Best Male Vocalist in 2020. His debut solo show "Taking the Wheel" – directed by Tony Award winner Faith Prince and music directed by multiple MAC Award winner Alex Rybeck – has been performed in numerous cities around the country. Recent credits include Fiddler on the Roof (Paper Mill Playhouse) NAMT, The York Theatre Company, and The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis. His debut album, Ari Axelrod Live at Birdland, is now available on all streaming platforms.

"Jim Caruso's Cast Party," a New York institution for two decades, is a wildly popular weekly open mic night/variety show that has brought a sprinkling of Broadway glitz and urbane wit to Birdland since 2003. Called "show-business heaven" by The New York Times and "the gold-standard of open mic nights" by The Wall Street Journal, "Cast Party" presents a potent mix of Broadway stars, jazz swingers and cabaret legends, in addition to new faces and rising talent from every genre. The buoyant, sharp and charming Caruso guides the entire affair, while musical genius Billy Stritch (Liza Minnelli, Tony Bennett) holds court at the ivories and leads the Cast Party Symphony Orchestra (Steve Doyle on bass and Daniel Glass on drums). "The Lineup with Susie Mosher" is a wild, anything-goes variety show featuring entertainers from the Broadway, cabaret and comedy scenes, ranging from today's hottest headliners to the best up-and-coming stars of tomorrow. Mosher – the noted actress and singer from Broadway and beyond, called "one of those talents you need to see to believe" by Time Out New York – hosts the spontaneous extravaganza every Tuesday, and each Lineup is unique and promises to deliver an unforgettable night of quintessential New York City entertainment.

Wendy Moten – "Sings Richard Whiting with a Splash of Soul"

After several sold-out concerts at Birdland, the Nashville vocalist best known for her 2021 run on NBC's "The Voice" returns with "Wendy Moten Sings Richard Whiting with a Splash of Soul." Wendy will celebrate the brilliance of Whiting classics, joined onstage by Henry Hey on keyboards,, Brian Delaney on drums, Aurelien Budynek on guitar, and David Santos on bass. Most recently Wendy made another appearance on "The Voice" to perform with CeeLo Green for Blake Shelton's final show. Wendy's new single "Don't Give Up" was recently released. Moten is a bridge from Memphis to Nashville to the rest of the world. Respected in the music business as a consummate professional for years, the wider public discovered her talent and charm NBC's "The Voice." She turned all four judges chairs during her blind audition and ended up as a finalist. A native of Memphis, Wendy sang Pop/R&B on a major label in the ‘90s, then moved to Nashville to become an in-demand harmony singer. She has recorded duets with Michael McDonald, Julio Iglesias, Kirk Whalum, Peabo Bryson, Vince Gill, Keb' Mo', Buddy Guy, Paul Brown, John Oates, and others. Wendy has performed as a solo artist on the Grand Ole Opry multiple times and recently with Blake Shelton.

Ann Kittredge – "Romantic Notions" Album Release

Singer Ann Kittredge will celebrate the release of her new album, Romantic Notions, which features fresh, creative arrangements of classics by Jimmy Webb, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Burt Bacharach, and others. The show will feature Christopher Denny on piano, Rex Benincasa on drums and percussion, Sean Harkness on guitar, and Mary Ann McSweeney on bass. Special guest will be Aaron Heick on saxophone and the evening is directed by Barry Kleinbort. Kittredge is a lifelong performing artist and multi-award winning vocalist. She has performed on Broadway, Off-Broadway (including King David, Dessa Rose, Nunsense, multiple seasons of A Christmas Carol and multiple NY City Center Encores!) and at major venues across the country (Arena Stage, Goodspeed Opera House, Huntington Theatre, among others). She is a regular on the cabaret circuit and her previous small venue shows, Movie Nite, Fancy Meeting You Here: An Evening of Ahrens & Flaherty and One Night Only, garnered rave reviews. Her debut album, reIMAGINE , earned the prestigious LaMott-Friedman Award, receiving glowing critical acclaim.

Steve Ross – "Finding Words for Spring"

Vocalist and pianist Steve Ross – widely heralded as "The Crown Prince of New York Cabaret" – returns in a special new show. He will celebrate the optimism of the season as well as the more mellow and reflective moods it evokes. Featured will be a salute to Michel Legrand and the Bergmans ("You Must Believe in Spring"), in addition to songs like "Some Other Spring," "It Might as Well Be Spring," and "Spring Isn't Everything." Ross has been a fixture of the cabaret community in Manhattan for over forty years. In 1981 he re-opened the legendary Oak Room at Manhattan's famed Hotel Algonquin where he held forth for over 15 years. He has appeared on Broadway in Noël Coward's Present Laughter and off-Broadway in his Fred Astaire tribute I Won't Dance. Internationally, he has performed in London, Paris, Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Melbourne and Sydney as well as cabarets and theatres across America and on the high seas. He hosted a live cabaret series for BBC Television, and back in America was host of New York Cabaret Nights, a series for National Public Radio.

Karen Akers – "Water Under the Bridge"

Singer and actress Karen Akers will return with her concert featuring musical director Alex Rybeck. Akers takes a look back at some of the songs that first brought her acclaim in cabaret as well as on Broadway, television, and recordings — works by Craig Carnelia, Maury Yeston, Edith Piaf, and Stephen Sondheim, among other treasures. Akers is one of America's more arresting and successful concert stars. She is the recipient of the 2005 New York Nightlife Award for Outstanding Female Cabaret Vocalist, as well as the 2009 Nightlife Legend Award. Ms. Akers has appeared in many prestigious venues worldwide, including Carnegie Hall and The Hollywood Bowl, as well as the Cafe Carlyle and The Oak Room at The Algonquin Hotel. She has taken her music to the south of France, Russia, and Barcelona's Liceu Opera House. She appeared on Broadway as one of the original stars of the Tony Award-winning musical Grand Hotel. She made her debut on the Great White Way in the original production of Nine, receiving a Tony nomination and a Theatre World Award.
