The reviews that reference the two well known films don't really examine the consensus: neither one is considered a particularly good movie, though they have their admirers. One is pretty but turgid, with stiff performances from leads who do good work elsewhere, and the other is busy, noisy, and music video hip but not particularly memorable as a piece of storytelling. I remember when the opera premiered and many agreed: for such a lean novel, it's oddly unadaptable. This show just seems another attempt to find a frame, and in bringing depth to the women, sacrificing some of the tale's commentary about human nature, ego, fruitless obsession. |
