Boy Meets Girl

There seems to be a renewed interest in the writing team of Bella and Samuel Spewack, with Kiss Me Kate coming to Broadway this season, and Boy Meets Girl at the Studio Theater. Samuel Spewack's birthday is today (Thursday September 16th), and he would have been 100 years young. Theater goers who would like to celebrate by seeing a Spewack play can see Boy Meets Girl for just $12, which also makes this a good chance to see Mr. (and Mrs.) Spewack's work for much-less-than-Broadway prices. Bella Spewack would have been 100 this year as well (March 25th). They were married for 50 years. Here is a recent press release on the show:

Navarre Productions Presents BOY MEETS GIRL, the classic 1930's comedy by Bella and Samuel Spewack about the movie business. Directed by Jennifer Uphoff Gray. September 3rd through September 26th. At The Studio Theater, 416 West 42nd Street

A smash hit on Broadway in 1936, BOY MEETS GIRL is a classic 1930's screwball comedy about two Hollywood screenwriters searching for the perfect twist on the old time formula. When they find it, they also find all sorts of trouble they never planned on, including a has-been cowboy, a scene-stealing baby, and, of course, a boy for the girl. With old-time movie producers, crazed actors and a studio lot full of bizarre characters, BOY MEETS GIRL is a hilarious reminder of a simpler time.

Bella and Samuel Spewack were one of the entertainment industry's most successful play- and screenwriting teams of their time. Other credits include the book to KISS ME KATE, which is being revived on Broadway this year by Michael Blakemore, whom Ms. Gray (the director of BOY MEETS GIRL) worked with on the Cy Coleman musical THE LIFE.

Jennifer Uphoff Gray has worked on numerous Broadway productions, including serving as the Associate Director for the Roundabout Theatre Company's recent revival of CABARET (now at Studio 54), and the Broadway production of THE BLUE ROOM, starring Nicole Kidman. Navarre Productions is a new company she has formed with actor Mike Efron; this is their inaugural production. The cast for BOY MEETS GIRL features Thomas Alpers, India Cooper, Mike Efron, Christa Kirby, David Koppel, Nina-Marie Gardner, Andrew Mersmann, J. Richey Nash, Howard Pinhasik, Eytan Schwartz, Natasha Staley, and Craig Williams.

BOY MEETS GIRL will play at Theatre 3, 311 West 43rd Street (1, 2, 3, A, C, E, N, R trains to 42nd Street). Performances will be Wednesday through Saturday at 8pm, with a Matinee Performance on Sunday September 26th at 2pm. Tickets are $12 for all seats, please call (212)414-5027 for reservations.
