Brave New World
American Theatre Responds To September 11th

by Nancy Rosati

American Theatre is responding to 9/11 with a theatre marathon from Sept 9-11 at NY's Town Hall. Producing Artistic Director J. Dakota Powell has put together four different performances which include over 50 plays and songs. 150 actors, directors, playwrights, composers and lyricists will be pooling their talent for this unique event.

Net proceeds will be donated to The New York Childrens Foundation, which was founded by children to benefit the children who were affected by Sept 11th and its aftermath.

Olympia Dukakis hosted an open rehearsal presentation at Sardi's this afternoon.

The first performer was actor Ivan Davila, reading from Pops, a new play by Edwin Sanchez, which told the story of a man who LOVED I Love Lucy, and how its continuing showing on TV helps his son cope with his father's death at the WTC.

Eli Wallach joined his young grandson Tyler in reading a poem that Tyler wrote called "I am as Strong as a Lion and as Soft as Silk."

Playwright Jonathan Marc Sherman took a more humorous approach in his play Ribbon in the Sky. It was performed by Catherine Curtin and Frank Whaley, playing fraternal twins just under 30 years old - Sherman's metaphor for the twin towers.

Michael John LaChiusa then sat down at the piano to accompany Donna Murphy on his song "There Will Be a Miracle."

Playwright Charles Evered, who also happens to be an officer in the Naval Reserves, and who participated in the Ground Zero recovery effort, explained that the reactions of New Yorkers to Fleet Week was very different this year. He wrote a play entitled Adopt a Sailor, concerning a couple (Bebe Neuwirth and Len Cariou) who bring a sailor (Josh Radnor) into their home. It becomes obvious over dinner that they both have very different reactions to 9/11.

Finally, Olympia Dukakis read an excerpt from a poem entitled "The Cure at Troy."

Throughout the presentation, everyone in the room listened intently, frequently laughing and occasionally fighting back tears. Clearly, this will be an emotional event as the New York community uses art to cope with this most painful anniversary.
