The problem with that idea is that London theatres often have public spaces like bars, so that patrons actually have someplace to go when they show up 45 minutes prior to curtain, even if the auditorium itself isn't open. I don't see a lot of people just showing up to the theatre in New York 1 hour early just to sit in their cramped little seat longer.

Broadway theatres have also trained audiences that shows don't start until 10 minutes past the time on the ticket, so a good portion of the audience isn't even bothering to show up until 5 minutes to curtain or even curtain time itself. So why would those folks showing up at 8.02pm for a supposed 8.00pm curtain suddenly change their habits and show up at 7.15pm?
