I also found the show a mixed bag, but there were so many great numbers in the first act that that forgave a lot. And yet...the first act felt heavy and slow, punctuated with some really great stuff. Jelly is a tough character to build a show around, sure, but I also felt the book didn't really get into any of the ramifications for his behavior. And my friend and I were confused: what exactly happened to bring him so low in the second act? I felt like a chunk of the story was left out, and with a narrator, what's the excuse for that? Was it just The Depression, or was there more we didn't see? I am certainly glad I caught the show, but I had put off reading these comments till I had seen it myself. I'd seen a lot of raves on my friends' social media pages so I appreciate this more nuanced conversation. And finally, sitting in my beloved, affordable size rear mezz, there were a lot of lyrics that sounded garbled. | |
