Since when were the Smash songs "mostly trunk songs from better days gone by"?? There are 21 Shaiman/Wittman songs for "Bombshell" in Smash... I'm sure a few were "trunk" songs for them, but "mostly"?
On stage they have no come closer to the magic in a bottle that was the Hairspray musical, where the score, book, full musical, and production of it all came together perfectly. They have done great work and not so great work on several musicals since that didn't work or at least gel, or reach the same level of quality as Hairspray, in Fame Becomes Me, Catch Me If You Can, Charlie/Chocolate Factory, and Some Like It Hot, plus the full-musical's worth of songs they gave for Smash, and the songs for the movie musical Mary Poppins Returns. |
