He and Eydie made for a great act. I think he actually would have been quite right and looked more like the real Nick Arnstein in the original "Funny Girl" than Sydney Chaplin; I don't know why the producers didn't want both Eydie and him. Based on her book, Barbra Streisand probably would have preferred him to Chaplin's treatment of her on-stage and off. Then, of course, Fanny's daughter Frances apparently wanted very movie star-looking people to play her parents and had a hard time accepting Streisand till Barbra had her great success in the role. But Steve was a very good actor; I remember he was quite funny on many appearances on "The Carol Burnett Show" (and Eydie could be quite funny when she sometimes appeared as a a guest in sketches, too). Interesting that Steve ended up with a Tony nomination for "What Makes Sammy Run?" playing a real heel character the same year as "Funny Girl" and playing opposite a much more traditionally beautiful leading lady in Sally Ann Howes in that show.

Steve's voice was very smooth, very lyrical and legato. I don't think he ever challenged it as much vocally or range-wise as Eydie did in some her songs; it's probably why his voice held out longer over time, still sounding really quite good. She really had pipes that rivalled Streisand's and some of the other prominent lady singers of her day. I say that as a Streisand fan, too. But what Steve and Eydie did as well was to have tv specials that would cover for the most part, the Great American Songbook, like focusing on the Gershwins and really sell it in prime-time tv to fine ratings to many millions of people. Their concerts were the big-time and Eydie, because of her excellent Spanish and Sephardic background, was an even bigger star in Spanish-speaking countries. Sorry to hear of his passing, but nice that the act is back together again and now playing again in Paradiso. Rest in peace and in song.
