Let's say there are 88 different notes (distinct and isolatable sounds) that we hear in western music - the 88 keys of a piano keyboard. In melody, we hear the differences between the notes in a sequence- called intervals. I'm saying there are 88 notes but only 12 intervals that are commonly used in popular song melodies. So when one says, "there's a lot of music but not a lot of motes" one could say "there's a lot of music but only 88 notes" or you could say, "there's a lot of music but only 12 intervals." The latter way of looking at it, to me, shows more dramatically why we find similar or identical phrases in different songs.
