I saw Cillian Murphy in both his St. Ann’s stage appearances, in Misterman in 2012 and in Grief is the Thing with Feathers in 2017 or 2018. Both were adventurous and unconventional theater pieces, and I admired his commitment to them. I didn’t much like Misterman — I found it confusing and tedious and, except for a large, complicated set, I don’t remember all that much about the text. But Murphy, unsurprisingly, is a very compelling presence on stage and he, more than the play, held my interest. “Grief,” I think, showed him to better advantage, and was both absurd and profoundly moving. |
