While Opera North in England has revived its production at least once (but I think perhaps just once), at least a few of the big opera companies that have done it have never brought it back. The Royal Opera production got generally mixed to negative reviews, partly because music critics, at least in England back then, didn't think much of the work and partly because it was felt that the cast could not bring out what was good about it.

Sondheim loathed the Chicago-Royal Opera production. He said that he would allow them to revive it because he didn't want them to have to pay for a new production but when Los Angeles Opera wanted to borrow it, he wouldn't allow it because he so disliked the production itself, irrespective of the cast (as the Chicago and Royal Opera casts were largely different).

I have seen some good performances by opera singers in some Sweeney roles at City Opera, especially the Lovetts of Joyce Castle and Myrna Paris (Paris had started in musicals). It's surprising that City Opera only brought back its production twice over the years, with a really long break between the 1987 and 2004 returns. Still, having seen it at City Opera all three times they did it (and twice in 2004 because I wanted to see both Lovetts), I can't say that I think it's worked especially well there. One problem, which may perhaps seem odd to some, is that I think the chorus has been too big when they've done it. But except for festivals like Glyndebourne and Salzburg, opera companies rarely have the rehearsal time something like Sweeney demands.
