They did. In the NT production the Chromolume was a piece of performance art. There was a lightbox (with the fourth wall missing, obviously) centre stage, with knee-height neon popups in front; images were back-projected onto the walls of the lightbox, and dancers moved within it.
You can see a little bit of it in the BBC Omnibus documentary on the making of the production, which is floating around on YouTube. The quality isn't great, but you'll get a reasonable impression of what they did - and, elsewhere, of what the set looked like during the rest of the production, because it was a significantly different design from the one seen on Broadway. |
