What Is the History of Broadway Dimming the Lights for Legendary African-American Theatre Greats?

The slipshop, embarrassing handling of the Broadway lights dimming for Hinton Battle has got me wondering about previous African-American theatre legends. For example, were the lights dimmed for Juanita Hall, Rex Ingram, Ethel Waters, Paul Robeson, Eubie Blake, Avon Long, August Wilson, Katherine Dunham, Lloyd Richards, and Ossie Davis -- to name just a few eminently worthy candidates to say the least?

I do remember the lights being dimmed for Lena Horne and Ruby Dee.
