DEAD OUTLAW succeeds on every level. It’s all vim and vigor. The conjoint book and score tell the (very droll) story neatly. And Cromer’s direction is, as is so often the case, elegant and deft. It’s a quirky show and, while the narrative sometimes strays, the tone is consistently, appreciably eccentric. The cast is uniformly good and everyone gets to play. From start to finish, DEAD OUTLAW is that increasingly rare bird: an original musical. Hopefully it can stay just where it is a little longer. A larger stage would dull its strange luster. |
