Carter McPherson, composer and lyricist for Happy Hour, is an Atlanta native and proud alumnus of The University of Oklahoma. As a composer and lyricist, he helped launch the "OUMT Playground," a student works initiative, with a reading of Look at the Stars, for which he wrote the book, music, and lyrics. Additionally, Carter served as assistant music director for the Pops Chorale in Oklahoma City Philharmonic's The Christmas Show with Rachel York. Through the support of multiple grants at The University of Oklahoma, Happy Hour was recorded as a series of music videos in the spring of 2023. All those shows, and many others, sprung from the brilliant mind of lyricist Sheldon Harnick (1924-2023), the proud recipient of the Pulitzer Prize, Tony Award®, and Grammy Award for his contributions to the American Musical Theater. As a lyricist, his works include Fiorello!, Tenderloin, Fiddler on the Roof, She Loves Me, The Apple Tree, and The Rothschilds. With composer Jerry Bock, he created such songs as "Sunrise, Sunset," "Tradition," "Vanilla Ice Cream," "When Did I Fall in Love," and "Artificial Flowers." He passed away in June 2023 at the age of 99. In commemoration of his 100th birthday, 54 Below will celebrate his life and legacy in an all-star concert that will feature a musical tapestry of his wit, wisdom, and words. Join us as Broadway artists who had the great fortune to collaborate with Sheldon Harnick recount their time with him and vividly bring his songs to life.
