Let's be more specific abut this - the "modern beat" in Phantom is only in the title song. But yes, I think a lot of people do find that anachronistic, when the rest of the score is in more of a classical pastiche feel.

I think it's funny that no one ever complains about "Tomorrow" in Annie, which feels very much like a 70's pop song, in a score that otherwise mostly feels 20's/30's. ("Hard Knock Life" is sort of an outlier too, but maybe that's more of a 60's/70's Broadway feel, something Strouse did a lot of. And while we're on the subject, how about the musical styles in most of the score of Applause lol??)

But when you think about it, the majority of musical theatre scores don't sound like the period they are set in. (Unless they're set in the time of the writing.) Let's start with Oklahoma. There's a leaning toward country feel in some of the songs, but does it sound turn of the century 1900's?? No, it doesn't. But it does sound like Rodgers and Hammerstein, and we just accept that. Jump ahead to The Sound of Music. Nothing much there that suggests the 30's. And really not even much that suggests Austria/Germany, except for a general kind of sweeping Rodgers sound that we might identify as being vaguely "European." But we don't tend to let that bother us.
