"The powers that be with this particular production" and "the London producers" are the same person: Cameron Mackintosh. So he would know very well how much confidence to place in a commercial run on Broadway.

West End shows don't publish their grosses but all the anecdotal evidence points to the run there being relatively unsuccessful if not an outright flop. I was able to get my ticket for a Saturday evening performance an hour before showtime at a steep discount and sat in the second row of the stalls. From what I could see, the house was about 70% sold. From reports on Theatreboard during the run, that was not unusual.

I imagine they'll get some starry names to join Peters and Salonga, but along the lines of Janie Dee and Joanna Riding in London. Performers who are known to regular theater-goers but probably won't sell many tickets to people who aren't already enticed by the top-line stars.

I'd be happy to be wrong but I cannot imagine this production is "surely" headed to a commercial Broadway run post-MTC.
