I think that $83 million figure might be the symphony's operating budget for the year. The SF Symphony has one of the largest endowments for orchestras in the US. But they are still in financial trouble or so they claim while also pushing forward a costly and rather iffy renovation plan. It's unclear whether Esa-Pekka Salonen's recent resignation was about money or differences in vision for the orchestra that the management has, Salonen claims it was about the later.
