"Consummate technician" maybe in regards to her dance technique like in something like her work in "The Show-Off" in "The Drowsy Chaperone". In vocal style, one talks about range, vocal line, tone, use of dynamics, vocal shadings, size of voice, projection, diction, etc. Some of these things change, of course, in Broadway style rather than more legit musical theater like opera or while singing works by the likes of Jerome Kern. Barbara Cook in "The Music Man", not Sutton Foster, would I equate to "consummate technician". Plus, of course, Cook added artistic meaning and ability to mold her rendition, besides a solid technique. Belting in a strident manner where the musical calls for beautiful singing and the use of incorporating head voice is not an example of consummate technique though. (Not replying to chromie, btw).
