Ok, I'll clarify. Over the years I have really been amazed as to how many people I've heard either insist or at least strongly insinuate that the original Bobby is gay. Either because he can't commit to a woman, or because the show's authors were gay and they were writing (or wanting to write) from their own experience, or both reasons. This despite the fact that Sondheim and Furth have commented that that was not their intention.

But since the gender-swapped revival premiered in London in 2018, to the present, I have not heard one person even ask if Bobbie could possibly be gay. Even though she can't commit to a man (or again because the sexuality of the show's writers, who some people think, as mentioned, might have wanted to promote the lead as gay, even though they've denied that). And I wonder why?

I hope that helps.
