| It's one of the most beautiful pieces of music Sondheim ever wrote, and I think it's dramatically very interesting with the lyrics and original circumstances. But those circumstances are just simply not part of Follies. The song doesn't make sense in any produced version of the script that I've seen. It's not like it was cut for time or cut from the basic version still done, it was part of a different iteration of how they were going to do the show. I heard this production (the only I'm aware of ever putting it in) put it in at the end after or as part of Ben's breakdown? I'm very curious to see what it was like but I can't imagine it "worked", and I am surprised a major production did this since it's surely not approved by MTI. |
