It’s very well written, fluidly staged, and is excellently performed (at least by the original cast, who I saw in previews for the West End transfer last year). It contains an abundance of craft, and having seen lots of not very good musicals in London recently, one can easily appreciate that it’s all very skilfully done.

I have to say, however, that it is relentlessly ironic in what I feel is a very British manner, and I think that I just lack the right sense of humour to appreciate the tone. Two minutes in it was very clear that the rest of the audience was having a much better time of it than I. When it does take a breath to be a little more sincere, such as for the aforementioned Dear Bill, I found it to be far more interesting and affective.

If you’re buying tickets in advance, note that they have a rather unique price policy where every seat in the theatre is the same price, irrespective of the seat location on all three levels. The prices differ between performances, and the policy for now seems to be making business sense in what is the smallest venue but one in the West End - but it is unusual.

FWIW, I would have given the Oliver to Next to Normal or A Strange Loop, both of which I found to be infinitely superior. The West End transfer of Next to Normal will be running in August.

Joe.
