I saw Mincemeat last November with all the original cast members. It’s a comic take with songs on a real life war story that was handled seriously in the very good Netflix film starring Colin Firth and Kelly McDonald, also called Operation Mincemeat.

The actors play multiple parts, sometimes women playing men (I forget if men played women). There are quick scene changes and the show is in the tradition of Oh, What a Lovely War! and Privates on Parade. It’s full of patter and jokes.

I found the whole show fun but a bit too arch for my tastes. The songs are amusing but not particularly memorable. But this company does a lot with a limited budget.

I don’t know if this still holds true but the tickets are cheaper at the start of the week (I went on a Monday) and increase by 10 pounds each day so the weekend tickets are the most expensive. This is a tiny theater and seating is cramped. Also the men’s bathroom is very small with low ceilings so I could barely fit to use a urinal stuck in a tight corner.

But I went to see the show because it got raves. I hear they want to transfer the show to NYC but I’m not sure the humor would translate over here. On the other hand it may appeal to the same audiences who love the Mischief Company’s work that has played here.

If I had production money I would invest in a NYC transfer of The Little Big Things which has inventive staging, a very catchy score and an inspiring story. I loved that musical and it played beautifully in a theater in the round.
