| What a fantastic thread you’ve started. I’ve always found the lyrics to “Everything’s Up to Date in Kansas City” (which you cited) to be especially witty. (I’m partial to “You can walk to privies in the rain and never wet your feet.” Love the use of ‘privies’ there.) But one of my favorite lyrics is from “A Grand Night for Singing”: “Somewhere a bird/ Who is bound he’ll be heard/ Is throwing his heart at the sky.” The image of a bird throwing his heart up to the sky in song is so poetic and magical. In a similar way, I’m always moved by the image in “You’ll Never Walk Alone” of dreams being “tossed and blown.” Dreams are swept away, they’re adrift, but not necessarily irretrievable. Tossed and blown are such evocative words that so beautifully complement the sentiment of the song. | |
