I just accompanied a final "new music unit" in one of my classes today. Out of 13 songs, I'd say maybe 10 of them had way too many lyrics per square moment for large portions of the song. And way overly busy accompaniments too. One wonderful respite was "Time Does Not Bring Relief" from Carmel Dean's score to Renascence. A literal art song, and a beautiful one. It can be done.
