| I'm so happy to see some love for ''Flower Drum Song,'' whose bright, delightful songs often get relegated to lower-tier Rodgers & Hammerstein. I've always thought ''I Enjoy Being a Girl'' has gotten a bad rap, as if it's some dated, sexist anthem of how all women ought to think. Hammerstein was writing a fun and flirty lyric for Linda Low's character; it's about what SHE enjoys. And she's as playful as Hammerstein's rhymes. Like rhyming ''swervy'' and ''curvy''; ''female'' and ''free male,'' and ''hair do'' and ''air do.'' Wordplay, like that, ''by me, that's only great.'' Many artists have sung ''I Enjoy Being a Girl,'' but none better than Pat Suzuki (now 93), who originally introduced it on Broadway. Brava! |
