| I also heartily applaud the Drama Desk for recognizing the stellar ensemble of ''Stereophonic'' and Cole Escola, as playwright/performer of ''Oh, Mary!'' As for Best Musical, the Drama Desk nominators have a history of being snobs about Broadway shows; they prefer Off-Broadway shows. So if there are 5-6 slots for Best Musical, you can usually bet that only two of them will go to current Broadway musicals. This year it's ''Illinoise'' and ''The Outsiders.'' Among this season's Drama Desk nominations, only 2 out of 5 nominees for Best Music came from Broadway; only 1 out of the 5 nominees for Best Lyrics is from Broadway (''The Outsiders''), and only 1 out of the 5 nominees for Best Book is from Broadway (''How to Dance in Ohio''!). Even though Off-Broadway musicals dominate those Drama Desk categories, the winner of Best Musical is almost always a Broadway show. In its nearly 50-year history of this category, only 2 Off-Broadway shows have ever won Best Musical: ''Little Shop of Horrors'' and ''Hamilton.'' |
