Forgive me if you already know this, but there is an opera based on The Great Gatsby. The score and libretto are by John Harbison, with song lyrics (for sections of the score that are meant to represent popular songs of the period) by Murray Horwitz. It premiered at the Met in December 1999 to mixed reviews. The Met brought it back for a few performances in 2002. I think it was also done at the Lyric Opera in Chicago, but has rarely if ever been produced elsewhere.
