I have always argued that Gatsby simply does not lend itself to stage or film adaptation. In light of the films, the opera, several stage adaptations, and the current musical theatre adaptation, I stand by my argument. I would have no problem being proven wrong. When words need amplification, use song, when song is not enough, add dance. When words, song, and dance do not work move to O'Neill and poetry. Gatsby already has words, O'Neill, and poetry. Translation to another medium is a challenge. Perhaps a futile one. I have often wondered why Sondheim did not attempt the challenge or why Guettel has yet to do so.
