Giving Chip Zien his first Tony nomination would've been a wonderful recognition of his performance in ''Harmony'' and a career capstone.

Zien's work has encompassed 15 shows, spanning 50 years on Broadway, including the Baker in ''Into the Woods'' and Mendel in ''Falsettos.''

Zien, who was nominated by the Outer Critics and Drama Desk for his work in ''Harmony,'' was campaigning so his show wouldn't be forgotten.

Besides doing the standard interviews, he had his drawing unveiled at Sardi's and did a video retrospective of his career for Playbill.com.

It's hard to get nominated from a closed show. Out of the 43 acting nominations announced today, only 8 of them came from closed shows.

I, too, also thought Barry Manilow & Bruce Sussman's songs deserved better, but the Tonys weren't giving THREE score nominations to closed shows.

For the record: Besides ''Harmony,'' the other shows that were completely shut out were: ''The Cottage,'' ''The Heart of Rock and Roll,'' ''How to Dance in Ohio,'' ''I Need That,'' ''Once Upon a One More Time,'' ''The Shark Is Broken'' and ''The Wiz.''
