The Vagina Monologues

There are some people who are just born for the stage. Unfortunately, renowned model, Frederique is not one of those people. She is just one of the three-person cast that performs in Eve Ensler's celebrated piece, The Vagina Monologues, which is currently running at National Theatre.

The Vagina Monologues give life to a variety of women. Each one has a unique story that is presented in the form of a monologue. As one can guess from the title, the vagina is the focus of the show. However, as the play unfolds, it is soon obvious that it is about more than a single part of the female anatomy. It is about individuals and their lives. Eve Ensler's writing is not subtle and that works best for this type of piece. The expertly crafted script is funny and bold but most importantly, it is real.

The Obie Award winning play has had a diverse cast since its initial run Off-Broadway. Frederique is just one of many to take part in this piece. It has featured the likes of Jasmine Guy, Sharon Gless and Kelly McGillis. Sadly, Frederique is no actress. She is new to this game and it shows. She displays no characterization. Her rushed delivery and lack of emotion make for a lackluster performance. However, Frederique does have some competent moments and there could be more if she were given stronger direction. Her pacing issues and her bad habit of constantly stepping on the audience's laughter are problems that could easily be fixed.

The elements that save this touring production are the script and the remaining cast members. Both Starla Benford and Amy J. Carle are excellent. Their portrayals are colorful and exuberant. There is no doubt that these ladies are pros.

The sparse set is a perfect canvas for Beverly Emmons effective lighting design. Each lighting effect is concocted to heighten Ms. Ensler's words.

The Vagina Monologues may be a curiosity for some. For others, it may be a bit intimidating. But in the end, it is evident that this very strong piece will speak to both men and women alike. The Vagina Monologues has a limited run through April 27th.
