Kevin Kent
Whipping up a blend of old and new, On the Air, the latest spectacle at Teatro ZinZanni, is a perfect tonic to take the chill out of the rainy, windy and sometimes snow-smattered Seattle mid-winter. Though the title is, as often, just a jumping off point for the kind of variety show one used to watch Ed Sullivan for on Sunday nights, the mixture of frolic and food continues to please visitors to this perennial Seattle pleasure palace.

In its earliest days here some two decades ago, modern-day vaudevillian Kevin Kent was a mainstay, so it is a delight that On the Air has cast him as a side-show style huckster, dripping with more Southern charm (or ham?) than is allowed in decent company. Whether in this guise or en femme as an outrageous Marie Antoinette-ish Queen of Hearts, Kent bends audience members to his wicked will. The more unlikely the victim, the more likely Kent will turn them into his willing plaything. With the kind of improv expertise that fired the vintage Robin Williams, Kent is reason enough to attend a show that is stuffed with other delights.

New to Teatro ZinZanni Seattle is a charmingly rubber-faced young Aussie man by the name of Joel Salom. Not only is he one of the most delightful jugglers ever to grace the tent, but he packs a persona and delivery in all his intercourse (between courses) with cast and audience alike. Chanteuse Anki Albertsson makes her first encore appearance in this show and contributes winsome and appealing pop vocals, while the more classic inclined can savor the gorgeous tones of one-time Teatro ZinZanni regular, opera diva Juliana Rambaldi, who returns from her present home in France to her one-time Seattle roots. Rambaldi vamps and camps up a storm between classical interludes, and exudes great warmth. Vita Radionova never fails to impress with her spinning hoops and physical contortions, and Les Petits Frere (Domitil Aillot, Gregory Marquet and Michael Bajazet) keep the fun going, however familiar their shtick has become.

The hearty multi-course meals are designed with flair and considerate accommodations for vegetarians and others with dietary requirements. The food service by a staff who are considerable show people in their own right is outstanding. I was sad to note the recent passing of founding musical director Norm Durkee, but his musical legacy is upheld by current maestro Hans Teuber. Bravo to director Norm Langill and staff for making sure Teatro ZinZanni stays in and on the air!

On the Air at Teatro ZinZanni, 222 Mercer St. near Seattle Center runs through June 1, 2014. For full information go to zinzanni.org.
