Long Day's Journey Into Night w/ Ruby Dee, Earle Hyman & Peter-Francis James tomorrow at 12:45 pm EST on TCM

In 1981, Geraldine Fitzgerald directed a production of Long Day's Journey Into Night with Gloria Foster as Mary, Earle Hyman as James, Al Freeman, Jr. as Jamie, Peter-Francis James as Edmund, and Samantha McKoy as Cathleen. It started at the Richard Allen Center and moved to the Public. It was a good if perhaps not great production except for one performance, which was enough to make me very glad I saw it. Freeman was the best Jamie I have ever seen. Also, McKoy scored wonderfully in her small role. (Yes, there are no small roles, and that was an example of someone proving it.) During the run, Freeman, in the midst of his long run on One Life to Live, cut back on the number of performances he gave each week. I think he cut down to four, but maybe it was five. Thommie Blackwell replaced him at the other performances

In 1982, there was a television production directed by William Woodman, featuring Ruby Dee as Mary, Hyman, Blackwell and James, and Rhetta Hughes as Cathleen. TCM will be showing this tomorrow at 12:45 p.m. EST (so it will be earlier in other time zones).

My memory is that the television production is more of a mixed bag than the stage production was. Dee seemed to need more rehearsal in what is, of course, an exceptionally difficult role, and Blackwell was fine but nowhere near Freeman. Admittedly, no one in my experience has been near Freeman, not even Robards in the film.

Still, I'm sure some folks here will want to watch it, and it does have Hyman and James, not my favorites in those roles but good.
