There has long been controversy about whether Brigadoon is an original. Brigadoon has similarities to a German story titled "Germselshausen," by Friedrich Wilhelm Gerstacker. There are differences (apart from locale) but the basic idea is the same. Lerner replied to the accusation by saying that a friend had already informed him of the similarities, and he was at first astounded by them, but then he learned that many cultures had similar tales of disappearing villages. Some people didn't really believe that he hadn't read or at least heard about "Germelshausen" before writing Brigadoon.

Still, there are plot differences, but no more than between "The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown" and Guys and Dolls. Actually, fewer than between "The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown" and Guys and Dolls.
