Brown, a romantic composer, doesn't seem a natural fit for a show about truth in journalism. Nonetheless, his tendency toward long lyric lines could advantage him here, since language, how it describes and distorts, is basically the subject. But instead it more often confounds the premise; too much is being spoken (sung) and not enough is being said. THE CONNECTOR doesn’t work entirely but, at its best, it has a sort of fervid, sentimental pessimism that’s compelling. And Brown’s score is routinely varied and often densely textured. If it regularly commands more attention than the words in front of it, he really gives you something to hear. All of the production elements are top tier and the cast is fully committed to putting this over. In all, THE CONNECTOR is a paradoxical show; it’s as often stirring as it is unconvincing.
