The common threads making recent Sondheim shows into big hits (Sweeney, Into the Woods, Merrily) are (1) strong productions and (2) media stars in the lead roles.
Historically, strong Sondheim productions haven't been major sellers, so the "stars as leads" must be the driver.
Should producers now start considering re-staging the Sondheim canon as vehicles for entities with existing fan bases outside of theatre?? |
