I didn't have nuns myself but my mother spun many tales of the nuns who had taught her in the 1930's and '40's and the second Cherry Jones opened her mouth I wished my mum had hung on to see that performance. (I was more enamoured of Streep than you, I must admit.)

That's very much what I intended to convey but didn't: that a principal in her late 70's would have been unusual.

I actually wouldn't mind seeing Tyne Daly play the grandmother in 4000 MILES at some point. I think she's old enough now to pass for 90 and she definitely has the air of an unrepentant Greenwich Village commie :). (Though not the specific credentials Mary-Louise Wilson had, having sung "The Flame" in FLORA THE RED MENACE.)
