| It would also be interesting to compile stats on absences by season too. I always wonder if the perception that absences have risen is true or if it's simply that we have more systems to report an absence quickly. I seem to remember Rent bursting on the scene with a young, raw cast who were out as often as they were in. The British mega musicals did a great job of keeping the focus on the show so cover and lead were probably interchangeable most years. And there are plenty of Golden Age stories of a cover going on for an indisposed star (Shirley MacLaine, Lainie Kazan, Liza Minnelli replacing in Chicago immediately pop to mind). It would be interesting to chart the Golden Age through now. |
