DOUBT is structurally neat—it’s lean and efficient—but it’s not foolproof. It needs the right actors to land. Here, unfortunately, the casting is off. Schreiber, particularly, is unconvincing. He’s so sturdy, so firm, that his choice at the end of the play seems out of character and so out of the blue; no credible expression of vulnerability or fragility has preceeded it. And Amy Ryan just doesn’t have might enough to challenge Schreiber’s self possession. She’s funny, but she lacks size. And she’s a little too close to loony; rather than pull you in, she scares you off. Schreiber and Ryan are, of course, fine actors but they just seem wrong here. The play’s delicate economy can’t survive them.
