Ludlam's breakthrough play "Bluebeard" (1970) was not only noticed and reviewed favorably by the Times but reviewed by a major established critic Mel Gussow. And Gussow steered Times readers to a re-purposed gay bar on West St. and Christopher where Ludlam had moved the play after a falling out with Ellen Stewart at LaMama. It is hard to imagine the Times today wasting digital ink praising a theater artist without industry or nonprofit backing and its attendant ideological/aesthetic clearance.
